Design idea of how to build an inclusive playground in a park

An inclusive playground design

WOW: The amazing, thrilling playscape attracts all ages and abilities with its richly varied, responsive play choice. The varied playground areas support both wild and quiet play types and behaviours, for young as well as older children and tweens.

STAY: Three playground zones with break areas invite long stays. KOMPAN’s six universal design principles guide a playscape inspiring children of all abilities to play and come back:

  1. Accessible, inclusive routing

  2. Access to relevant ground-level activities

  3. Access to relevant elevated-level activities

  4. Support thrilling or challenging play

  5. Support social interaction

  6. Variation in play activities

DEVELOP: The abundance of play choices ticks the boxes for fun stimulation of children’s physical, social-emotional and cognitive-creative development. The physical interaction with play equipment and peers support children’s life skills, their understanding of the world, their health and their happiness, playfully.

Let’s play

Physical
Joy of movement: motor skills, muscle, cardio and bone density
Cognitive
Joy of learning: curiosity, understanding of causal relationships and knowledge of the world
Social-Emotional
Joy of being together: teamwork, tolerance and sense of belonging
Creative
Joy of creating: co-creation and experimenting with materials
