CO2 calculations – greener playground

Greener playgrounds are an expression of our many initiatives to focus on using materials with minimal environmental impact and transforming what was once considered waste into building blocks of laughter and learning for children and young people.

Recycling raw materials is an important part of green playgrounds, as the majority of our total CO2 emissions come from the materials we use in our products. Therefore, KOMPAN is always looking for ways to reduce our environmental footprint, and by recycling materials from consumer waste, CO2 emissions can be significantly reduced compared to using new, non-recycled raw materials.

CO2 calculations are an objective way to assess greener playgrounds, as you can compare your products based on a CO2 footprint. Therefore, a calculation of the product's CO2 footprint has been made for all KOMPAN products, which gives a complete picture of the CO2 emissions generated during the manufacture of each product. The carbon footprint of greener playgrounds made from recycled materials is significantly lower than playgrounds made entirely from new raw materials. We also provide the recycling percentage for each product, so it is easy to see and compare how much recycled material is used in the products

Independent third party – recognized calculation methods

To get a picture of the total CO2 footprint of the individual product, many different factors must be included in the CO2 calculations. For our calculations, we use EPD (Enviromental Product Declarations), which is a recognized environmental product declaration that calculates the impact of the products' materials on the environment, making it possible to compare with other products. EPD is based on a life cycle assessment of products in relation to production, use and disposal, and EPD is used to make more environmentally conscious material choices, and to obtain precise data on recycling, energy consumption, etc. more recycling and less raw materials. KOMPAN has chosen to use Bureau Veritas as an independent party to verify our EPD and calculation methods.

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol

It is not only the carbon footprint of products that KOMPAN maps. KOMPAN has chosen the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol to map the company's impact on global warming. The GHG Protocol helps organizations focus their efforts on areas where they can reduce their carbon footprint the most. The Protocol divides emissions into three "scopes":

  • Scope 1 :The direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company, such as fuels used in the company's cars or furnaces.

  • Scope 2 : The indirect emissions from the production of energy supplied from outside, such as electricity or heat that the company purchases and uses.

  • Scope 3:All other indirect emissions that occur in the company's value chain, including both upstream and downstream emissions. This can include everything from production of purchased materials (recycled materials and raw materials) to transportation (logistics) to waste disposal, employee transport activity and use of sold products and services.

The GHG Protocol is part of KOMPAN’s sustainability reporting.
