Swimming in a Sea of Inclusive Play

Point Pleasant, an oceanside community in New Jersey, is a highly frequented vacation destination for visitors looking to enjoy its beautiful beaches. The County of Ocean was looking to renovate an outdated playground at Beaver Dam Creek County Park, a 40-acre park known for its winding boardwalk trails through tidal wetlands. The County wanted a themed playground that called on the ocean elements fitting to the beach community, but most importantly, created an inclusive play space with accessible surfacing and equipment. Calling on the successful working experience of past projects, The County worked with KOMPAN to create a "top-to-bottom" ocean-themed playground, centered around a custom giant octopus COROCORD play structure.

"The park was always a heavily visited park, but not for the playground. With the addition of the octopus, we created a destination for people to come enjoy."

Geoffrey Lohmeyer, Senior County Park Manager, Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation

High or Low Tide, Play Options at All Levels

Play opportunities can be found throughout the entire Giant Octopus play structure. Adventurous older kids can climb up the climbing net up into the octopus's head, and calmer moments of play can be found throughout its tentacles with dichroic panels and swaying hammocks. The Ocean Seesaw, Spinner Bowls, and play panels surround the octopus and provide bouncing, spinning, and tactile play opportunities. The ADA-accessible rubber pour-in-place (PIP) surfacing continues the nautical theme at "sea level" by featuring dolphins, sharks, and waves in its design.

This is the first phase of Beaver Dam Creek County Park's playground renovation, with swings and additional play equipment for 2- to 5- year-old children to come.
