Inspiration behind Coventry's inclusive playground
Kingsbury Academy reached out to us at KOMPAN, looking for guidance on the right play area to meet the needs of their pupils at their SEN school. Over the course of a year, we met with the school numerous times, working closely with them to achieve the perfect design and make the best equipment choices to suit their requirements and pupils' needs.
The Academy is located on the doorstep of Coundon Wedge Conservation Area, and most of the classrooms have access to their own outdoor area. However, the play areas were in much need of updating, with many currently unavailable to children due to health and safety concerns.
KOMPAN understood Kingsbury Academy’s need for an updated, safe play space that was inclusive and accessible, offering group play, individual play, and elements of safe risk. Many of the pupils have sensory processing needs, so sensory play was important to include in the design of the new play area. Some of the pupils have very limited communication, so it was essential to create a safe space where they can play and interact with one another.
“It was a real pleasure working with KOMPAN, from the bidding stage of the project right through to implementation. They did a great deal of work helping us to visualise and plan our options. The representative had excellent product and installation knowledge, so that we were fully aware of the suitability of the equipment to our needs. The company was very patient, as the time from enquiry to placing the order was considerable. And several changes in the proposal were requested, which were dealt with promptly and without any hassle. The finished playground is exactly how we envisaged it would be, and the kids absolutely love it. I would thoroughly recommend KOMPAN for their level of service and customer focus”

Play for all
The pupils of Kingsbury Academy now have a fully accessible, inclusive and exciting new play space which can be enjoyed for many years to come. The play area is now a great space to burn off energy, whilst being in a safe and secure environment. In times of high stress, the sense of swinging, bouncing, sensory play or being up high would help them to feel calm again and ready to return to the classroom.
