"Age-Friendly" in the outdoors
How do you support your aging population in entering their retirement years with health, wellbeing, and community top of mind? In Maryland’s Howard County, officials enacted the “Age-Friendly Howard County Action Plan” to assess the needs of their senior citizens. With “outdoor spaces and buildings” being one of eight areas of attention, the County worked with KOMPAN to create this age-friendly fitness lot at Centennial Park North. The site, featuring strength, cardio, and mobility outdoor fitness equipment, creates a welcoming, accessible environment for residents to work out at their pace amongst their neighbors in the fresh air.

Strength, cardio, and mobility together
What makes the outdoor strength machines easy to use is the adjustability of the weight and the seats, mimicking what you'll find at an indoor fitness center. The handles accommodate different heights, and each machine has a sign to decode how to use them. The Chest Press, Horizontal Row, and Shoulder Press cover all angles of pushing and pulling for the upper body. The Leg Press is effective for the big muscles in the lower body. The Leg Lift & Pull Up activates the core and back of the user. The Balance station trains ankle strength and stability in a social setting.
Residents will find three types of cardio machines for the heart-pumping workout of their choice. An Arm Bike can be accessed by wheelchair, and the City Bike and two Cross Trainers feature a 7" touchscreen.
