Celebrating Indigenous People & Traditions

When the Town of Laurel and Laurel Redevelopment Corporation wanted the new playground at Tidewater Park to honor the Nanticoke Indian Tribe, they worked with KOMPAN to create a destination playground that shares the stories and history of the area's original inhabitants. The nature-based playground includes four sections that highlight Nanticoke folklore, including the beaver, the squirrel, the turtle, and the Rainbow Crow.

“KOMPAN’s ability to create an active play area that shares the folklore of the Nanticoke Tribe has put Laurel on the map as a unique tourist destination.”

Ed Lewandowski, Community Development Specialist, Delaware Sea Grant/University of Delaware

The vibrant, 30-foot-wide custom play structure commemorates the legend of The Rainbow Crow and his inspiring act of selflessness. By flying to the sun to bring fire back to other animals, he scorched his colorful feathers and beautiful voice. When swaying on the hammocks under The Rainbow Crow's wings, Children can be reminded of the importance of helping others, even when that sacrifice comes at a cost to themselves. Just like the flamed torch carried in his beak, The Rainbow Crow also provides active thrills on the climbing ropes and slide.

The playground includes other thrilling play equipment, such as ziplines and swings, and interactive panels with QR codes complement the larger play structures in sharing Nanticoke Indian stories and legends. With the destination playground, Laurel officials aim to revitalize the downtown district, increase tourism, and forge a stronger communal connection.
