A school with sustainability ambitions
Sustainability and educating champions of the future are key elements for the Copenhagen International School (CIS). The school has set out to become a 100% sustainable institution and to educate and inspire students to lead the world towards a more sustainable path for the future.
The school building has won numerous national and international design awards with its unique architectural look and 12,000 solar panels on the front. The solar panels not only add to the school's design, but they also cover 50% of the school's energy consumption.
Ambitious when choosing a partner
Like with all other aspects of the school, the bar was set extremely high when deciding on a supplier for installing and designing the new play area on the school's 2nd floor. The school was clear in its demands. It had to be highly durable in order to be sustainable, and it had to be safe and inspiring for the children.
The school partnered with KOMPAN, which holds the environmental ISO 14001 certification, to build their new 2nd-floor playground overlooking the sea. KOMPAN's strategy to play green taps right into CIS's ambitious sustainability strategy. KOMPAN uses sustainable and recycled materials combined with a strong focus on reducing waste in production.
"We wanted durable solutions to be environmentally friendly and something that would challenge and speak to the creativity of our students."
Thomas Nielsen, Director of Communications - Copenhagen International School
A great educational tool
Copenhagen International School educates children from around the world. With such diverse backgrounds, these students are united through a medium they all understand – play.
Students at this school can't get enough of equipment like the thrilling basket swings and beloved "playground spinning wheel," or Supernova. These pieces are especially great at bringing students together and providing hours of fun. Other structures like the Corocord Octanet, Rope Bridge for kids, and various Galaxy climbing equipment draw students in and allow them to challenge themselves, building confidence and self-esteem. Now, when it comes to developing creativity and cooperative skills, the Robinia village is the place to go. In this space, students are welcomed into a world of imagination and play.
Overall, this playground is designed to give the children a universal play experience that will develop their bodies and minds, teach them to work together, and inspire them to become champions of a just and sustainable world.
