Incorporating history into play
In Porvoo, Finland, they wanted to incorporate history into play. The small city near Helsinki has been home to one of Finland’s biggest ancient fortresses since the 12th century. To honour this historical monument, the municipality wanted a playground telling its story. They succeeded with help from KOMPAN and its wide range of themed play equipment. The result - a spectacular wooden play castle as the centrepiece of the city. The natural playground is constructed in visually appealing Robinia hardwood, which offers a smooth, fine-grained play surface. Robinia timber is strong, sustainable and durable, making it the preferred material for play features. The grain also determines how KOMPAN’s craftsmen use it, so every structure is unique.
The idea was to incorporate the castle and Porvoo's history into the theme of the park.

A royal play day
With the wooden playground castle, knights and princesses are offered a royal play day where imagination comes to life! Special elements such as cannons and barred windows support the dramatic play, which is scientifically proven to strengthen communication skills, and emotions and empathy, when negotiating play scenarios. By climbing up the ropes, nets or rock climber to entrance the castle, spatial awareness, balance and cross-coordination skills are developed just as physical strength is gained. Extra thrills are added when going down the slide or banister bars. Activities also strengthen the children’s bone density, like when jumping off the bars to land safely back on the ground. While the children are playing, the parents can hang out in the shaded area of the playground or use its fitness equipment. A historical adventure for today’s perfect family experience.
