Playground design to Attract More Visitors
The original natural playground, installed during the ‘Playbuilder’ era, had served the visitor centre well for many years. However, as time passed, the playground aged and the equipment was beyond its servicable life, leading to a significant decline in both visitors and revenue. Recognising the need for change, Leeds City Council decided to upgrade the playground by adding new playground equipment. The Council initiated a tender process to design an innovative play area that would cater to all ages and be inclusive of all abilities.
Nestled within a beautiful woodland setting, protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs), the project had to carefully consider the location of tree roots to maximise the space while adhering to playground safety standards. After finalising the designs and confirming delivery and installation timelines, Leeds City Council gave us the green light to proceed. With a clear objective to create a standout new play area to attract more footfall, ultimately boosting revenue. With this in mind we began preparations to rejuvenate the Garden Centre.
"Hospitality transactions have risen by 33.33% .....The Arium is currently on track for a positive return on investment."
Andrew Culloden, Leeds City Council
The result?
The project was delivered on time and the new play area has seen a drastic upturn in usage of the park and the visitor centre. The council's intention was to become more family-friendly, which they have successfully achieved, being labelled as the "Best Playground in Leeds" by Families Online.
Increase in Revenue
There have been many positives following the installation of the city's new industry-leading playground. The café has seen a 125% increase in transactions, with families visiting the centre and spending all day there. This has led to the council needing to build a new car park due to the increase in stay duration! With this rise in hospitality transactions, there has been an overall 20% increase in revenue.
Increase in Footfall
With this massive increase in families visiting the centre, they have noticed a considerable rise in overall visitors. The Arium has worked out that footfall has increased from 43,200 to 97,200.
