Bespoke Outdoor Playground in the Heart of London

The Richard Hope play area is the second of three installations by KOMPAN in Finsbury Park, London. Named after a local playwright who passed away in the park, the play area includes subtle dedications to him throughout, such as a stage and seating area for children and local amateur dramatics groups to gather. The main aim of the park was to be as inclusive as possible, incorporating equipment for those with mobility issues, learning difficulties, and those who are able-bodied. Surrounded by nature, the play area needed to blend with its surroundings, which is why Robinia wood was chosen for the equipment.

“What I love about the park is that there are so many different things to go on, and I love the ropes because I can do tricks on them."

Sophie, local kid, age 6

The Result?

The play area as a whole has a natural, rustic appearance, with natural boulders incorporated to add a sense of grandeur. From the top of the play area, visitors can look down on the equipment, creating an impressive view. The giant Corocord Explorer Dome serves as the focal point of the play area, surrounded by a variety of other features, including a multiplay unit, a rope bridge, and more traditional pieces like swings and seesaws. In addition to the diverse equipment, there’s ample seating for adults, allowing them to keep an eye on the children and ensure their safety. That’s what makes a great park and a great city—a safe, inclusive space where people want to return time and time again.
