Helmsdale’s out of world play ‘space’
The team at Helmsdale and District Community Association set out to refurbish the existing play park area at Rockview Place, Helmsdale. There was a need to replace equipment that was no longer fit for purpose and to create a more inclusive, universal area- fit for the 21st century! Their vision was to create a space themed play area for all ages and abilities to benefit from, and a place which also celebrates the fact Helmsdale is home to the first native Scot in space - Virgin Galactics Chief pilot, David Mackay.
“Thank you for all your support & patience throughout the project! It became a labour of love and a great success. Thanks also to Greer, Ian and the rest of the gang too.”
Shelley Taylor, Helmsdale & District Community Association Group
3, 2, 1... Lift off!
The Helmsdale community group felt the renovation of the space was vital after the huge negative effect COVID-19 had on their youngsters. They missed out on many social benefits that they usually took for granted. Children’s mental and physical wellbeing thrive when they are involved in outdoor play.
"Children flourish when playing outdoors in all weathers. Feeling sun, wind, rain, snow and ice is important as it connects us as human beings to the planet we live on." (Quote from Play Care Inspectorate). By giving the local children, the opportunity of these attributes, the group felt it was important to invest in the future of their area and empowering communities.
The KOMPAN designers really took the theme of the play area and ran with it, creating a unique rocket ship themed play structure together with a Mars Rover multi-seat springer and planet themed rubber wetpour surface.
