Creating a Standout Inclusive Outdoor Playground for the Community
When Denbighshire brought this site out to tender they wanted a ‘WOW’ theme and to create a destination park. It was a tired play area that hadn’t had any investment in decades. They wanted to honour the local area’s history whilst creating an exciting new play space that would attract families from other areas to come and spend time in Ruthin. The customer also wanted a supplier that could offer ‘design and build’ using sustainable materials that had certification backing its carbon footprint, as well as sensitively chosen products and solutions. The importance for this site to be very inclusive and accessible was at the top of their checklist too. They were also under some time pressure with the funding for this project so we had to act fast.
“We chose KOMPAN because of their expertise in the delivery of accessible play areas. The team have been fantastic to work with. Millie and the wider team have been amazing.”
Michael Bennion, Streetscene Operations Manager
Creating a WOW Factor with a Variety of Playground Equipment
We ensured the site was equipped with a wide range of play activities, stimulating both mind and body. Inclusive features such as our inclusive swing seat, kaleidoscope visual boards, large deck-supported seesaw, and springers demonstrated our serious commitment to inclusivity.
We decided to create two bespoke units from our Moments Castle range. These included a large yellow tube slide, additional low-level play panels, and sensory play elements such as slime rubber dripping in the dungeons, functioning castle doors, a treasure chest, hammocks, and chill-out spaces incorporated beneath the castle structure.
To enhance the theme, we added unique items like a 3D surface dragon and a hopscotch knight. Within the castle zone, we strategically focused on the younger age range, with play features suitable for children up to 14 years. Additionally, we created a second space further into the park, near the existing skate park, designed for 'tweens' and 'teens'.
This second area offers informal play opportunities, chill-out spaces, swinging, climbing, advanced balance challenges on our Supernova carousel, and activities that test upper body strength and agility.
