Inclusive Focus

Dungannon Primary School in Belfast caters to children of all abilities, including a dedicated class for children with additional needs. To enhance their outdoor play space, they wanted a focus on inclusion, the school reached out to KOMPAN due to our expertise in creating accessible and inclusive designs. Our goal was to ensure that all children could benefit from a safe, engaging outdoor playground. In response, our design team developed equipment tailored to meet the needs of children with varying abilities, ensuring everyone could participate and enjoy.

Dungannon Primary School, County Tyrone - Media
“All the children engaged with at least one element, and all were interested to climb up the various areas. The wide steps are great for the children who are less confident with their gross motor skills and coordination, the rock wall element is large enough to challenge my year group but not too large for them to find it intimidating and for those who are more adventurous attempted the curly climber. It is a great addition to the outdoor play space. I can see how this will result in children who are relaxed, regulated, and ready to participate in class activities in the future.”

Inclusive School Playgrounds

At KOMPAN, inclusive play is at the heart of everything we do. The result is Universal Designs embrace the needs of all. Universal Design means the design of products and environments can be used by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or special design. In Universal Playgrounds, all children can play together – with peers, with teachers or individually. There is no need for segregated areas, which may cause stigma.

We have one GOLDEN AIM, that everyone takes something positive out of playing in a KOMPAN School Playground. All children, regardless of ability, through play are learning and developing as humans. We ensure this can be maximised through our play values that are key elements in childhood development, which is physical, cognitive, creative and social – emotional development. Every product we design incorporates at least one of these essential elements, ensuring that each playground experience is rich in learning and development.

PHYSICAL

SOCIAL - EMOTIONAL
