Bethnal Green is an area of deprivation, and home to multiple ethnicities, cultures, and religions, so it was important for the council that they created an area that could bring everyone together. At the same time as installing the Weavers Field Outdoor Gym area, the council put out a competitive tender for an all-inclusive playground for toddlers and pre-teens, which KOMPAN also won.
The main unit of the playground is completely bespoke, and features wheelchair accessible ramps so that no child is left out of play. As you make your way up the ramps, you will find numerous interactive panels where you can play music on, or play games with your peers.
With fully inclusive the main theme, there is something for the most active child right through to those who maybe don’t like to jump around; they can play with the numerous elements that test their cognitive and thinking skills, as well as creativity. The council were particularly proud of the fact the playground boasts equipment that they hadn’t seen elsewhere or on other tenders, for example, the Sputnik - a netted, hexagon hideout which is perfect for those children who like to take a step back and observe the playground.
The Inspiration Behind Weavers Field Play & Fitness Design
The London Borough of Tower Hamlets set out to create a safe space for all, aiming to cultivate social skills and a community spirit. Inspired by the vision of building a strong community within a multi-diverse area, they teamed up with the innovative minds at Kompan, hoping to bring everyone together.
Weavers Field playground offers children a wide range of thrilling activities to dive into. The playground was built with a specific focus on being inclusive, allowing all children and parents, regardless of their physical or mental disabilities, to participate. Alongside the outdoor play area, Kompan also helped design an outdoor fitness area, built to enforce the same goal, bringing people together.
